Introduction to Solar Panels
Photovoltaic solar panels generate electricity by converting the energy radiated from the sun. As the name
suggests photo meaning "light" and voltaic meaning "electricity". These panels are getting popular day by day due
to their effective use. Cleaner energy sources are in huge demand due to larger benefits they provide. The
efficiency of these renewable power sources is getting better with the progress of technology and they are getting
more common. Solar power has the advantage over all other renewable energy sources as it supplies domestic
energy.
Purchasing a brand new Solar panel is costly, although it's only a one time investment. But you can build
yourself one panel if you can give it some time and work patiently on it. The Solar power can save you big money.
First you reduce the electricity bill amount by using it and second, you can sell the extra power generated through
panels back to the grid and get paid. You see, the double benefits here. Apart from these, you are helping the
environment too.
Photovoltaic Solar panel is the fastest growing renewable energy in the world. Production of photovoltaic cells
is constantly growing at a rate of fifty percent every second year after 2002. The expected amount of power
generated by solar panels may exceed twenty thousand megawatts by the end of year.
Photovoltaic solar panels use solar cells to generate electrical power. Solar cells are made of semiconductor
materials called silicon. A portion of light is absorbed by the semiconductor and this energy puts the electrons
present in silicon on loose. Photovoltaic cells have an electric field that forces the free electrons to flow in a
certain direction. Free flow of electron is electricity. We use this electricity for external use by placing metal
contacts on the cell.
Photovoltaic Solar panels are extensively used for power generation in places which receive sunlight abundantly.
Technological advancements and increase in the manufacturing scale has made them very cheaper since the first solar
cell was manufactured. Now they are used for power generation on more than 100 countries. The largest solar power
station is in Spain which generates huge sixty megawatts power. Also enthusiasts install them on the rooftops of
home to harness the solar energy.
Nature has not given us infinite stores of traditional energy sources like coal and petroleum. Renewable energy
sources are our necessity. The ever growing technology has made it possible to live in a greener world and enjoy
the modern conveniences we are accustomed to.
